The history of puzzles: from geographical maps to works of art

Did you know that puzzles weren’t always the engaging form of entertainment for the whole family that they are today? Their history goes back to the 18th century, when it wasn’t fun that mattered — it was… learning!
Historia puzzli: od map geograficznych po dzieła sztuki

Beginnings: education through cut-outs

The first puzzles were created in 1766 in England. John Spilsbury, a cartographer and teacher, came up with a brilliant idea: he cut maps into wooden pieces, separating the borders of countries. Children, by putting the pieces together, learned geography while also developing observation skills and logical thinking. This was the birth of the first “educational puzzle.”

The 19th century: from education to home entertainment

At the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, puzzles started to move beyond classrooms and schools. Paper versions allowed for mass production, and the themes expanded beyond geography: genre scenes, portraits, animals, and landscapes began to appear. Puzzles became a popular way to spend free time at home, combining fun with the practice of patience, focus, and attentiveness.

A boom in the 20th century

In the 20th century, puzzles began to take on new forms. Sets of 1,000 pieces and more became popular. Motifs inspired by art, comics, and nature made puzzling a true passion for adults. It was also the time when puzzles gained value as gifts — little works of art that pleased the eye and gave satisfaction once completed.
